Film and drama streaming services offer possibilities

Monash staff and students can access a number of streaming services in the areas of film and theatre through the Library.

In addition to providing the ability to present films and performances in a class or lecture theatre, these specialist streaming services offer additional resources such as texts, criticisms and interviews with performers that supplement the material available in the performance itself.

If you’re a lecturer teaching literature or performance, for example, and your students need to learn about classic performances, three ideal databases to consult or refer them to would be: Drama Online, Digital theatre Plus and the Routledge Performance Archive.

Watch recordings of live theatre productions from the Royal Shakespeare Company and landmark productions in the Globe theatre, plus access a wide collection of resources including play texts, videos and books on theatre craft, practitioners, criticism, physical actor training and a list of monologues.

Digital Theatre Plus brings you an international arts library of contemporary theatre and performing arts. It includes dozens of interviews and documentaries with the casts and creative teams - anyone and everyone involved in the wealth of roles that happen behind-the-scenes, and shares how theatre is made in the most realistic and immediate way.

This archive contains a continually expanding range of streamed video and audio footage from performance practitioners past and present, paired with relevant critical commentary, and interviews with key figures in performance history and contemporary practice. It also features masterclasses with specialist performance trainers from around the world; excerpts of and full-length contemporary productions and experiments, and documentaries previously unavailable to global audiences. A wider range of films

Of course you may be looking for a film that is contemporary and is focussed on dance for example, or political matters. Streaming services are also available for these films.
  • Kanopy is an on-demand streaming video service that provides access to more than 26,000 films each year. Kanopy works directly with filmmakers and film distribution companies to offer award-winning documentaries, training films and theatrical releases. A quick look at the Kanopy page shows the range of films they offer.
  • ArtFilms Digital supplies a range of films in the area of dance and performance, from music to electronic media, from physical to spiritual, from visual arts to photography, fashion and later included philosophy and religion, gastronomy, history and politics and psychology.
  • Film Platform is more political, with films offered on many topics ranging from the future of Isis, the Gay Marriage debate, and the actions of Big Tobacco.
If you need any assistance in using these resources please contact Jackie Waylen, subject librarian for Theatre, Performance and Music.
